“We are Hmong.”

The Hmong people are a Southeast Asian ethnic group who live in simple farming communities in mountainous regions originating from China, and now found throughout Laos, Thailand, and other neighboring countries. In the late 1960’s, during the Vietnam War, the Hmong were asked and recruited to fight alongside the United States in what is widely known now as the “Secret War”.

Due to their involvement, Hmong villages were sought out for prosecution after the war ended. Thousands of lives were lost and many more were forced to flee their communities. Many fled deeper into the jungle while others found refuge in refugee camps. Of those fortunate enough to find refuge emigrated to the United States and other countries with the first documented Hmong family arriving in the United States in 1975. Today, there is a thriving community of over 320,000 Hmong people living across the United States.

Of those that still reside in Southeast Asia, many Hmong families continue to live in poverty with limited resources and access to proper education.

Here at Her Society, as proud Hmong Americans and second generation immigrants, we look to honor the profound journey our parents and grandparents took that afforded us these opportunities to flourish. Therefore, in honor of our people, we are committed to giving back to Southeast Asian Hmong women and children through education funding. For we wholeheartedly believe they will come to shape their own communities and future generations to come.
