Batik is a wax resist dye process used by the Hmong people of Indochina. Hmong women embroider time-consuming, accordion-folded skirts and infant carriers that are passed down from generation to generation. Traditionally, designs are drawn with wax onto hand-spun hemp and then colored with indigo to create an indigo blue cloth with a white pattern. These textiles have since served as a visual narrative tool throughout Hmong people's history.

The Women Behind the Cloth
All of our pieces are individually hand made from Hmong women who live in Southeast Asia, primarily in Thailand and Laos. From mother-daughter teams to aspiring individuals who proudly respresents the respect and care that goes into making Hmong fabric.
These women truly inspire us...
